Architects inspire us everyday to build progress for people and the planet.
At the 2021 Venice Architecture biennale, we gave the floor to innovative and inspiring architects in a video series called ‘Building Conversations’. In this project, twelve prominent professionals —including Biennale curator Hashim Sarkis, Lina Ghotmeh, Benedetta Tagliabue — share their vision on architecture and its latest trends. All the videos were also presented in dedicated articles on the magazine Designboom.
[Music] architecture is not naturally grown it's man-made it's a decision to build in a certain way in our contribution to this espionage we basically did an homage to a self-builder and a publisher 86 year old lloyd khan and we put his work in dialogue with your work leo there are walls that want to prawl that's the name of our piece is actually a reference to a poem from one of lloyd khan's publication it's called shelter it's a book that looks at self-built practices all over the world it was published in 1973 and has sold 300 000 copies but in the architectural world he's totally unknown but it's within a community of organic green building movement that he had a humongous impact for us it was important to look back 50 years which is quite a long time and try to learn from him his vision on sustainability on the power of self building the ideas that he proposed on how to live together that are coming out of this 70s 60s revolution for me are still extremely inspiring in the 70s clearly people were trying to reinvent a complete world so the house was only a small part of a complete reinvention of the way people were living together like looking at these kind of ideas he was questioning preconceived notions of how we can live together the question also implies somehow there's an end to the way we live and it's not going to last forever it's just not sustainable the thinking behind all of the projects in in in the oval of lloyd khan in the books it's a more organic holistic understanding of architecture and building and construction as opposed to mechanical very functional and logical way of creating the build environment architecture is not about answering direct questions from the capitalist society we live in it's much more simple uh task as architect it's working with people to build their own house what's beautiful about shelter is not just the book itself it's all the people that were inspired by it and build their own house the beauty with the publications by lloyd is that there are so called meta manuals they give you almost like instructions how you can build your own house one thing he said is don't wait until you're ready to start lloyd told us my life is a series of mistake and say don't be scared to do mistakes just start [Music] you
